Evaluation of the New Deal for Lone Parents: A Comparative Analysis of the Local Study Areas

In-House Report No. 63

By Anne E. Green

This report contributes to the work that has been carried out as part of the New Deal for Lone Parents (NDLP) Phase One evaluation. The evaluation of NDLP Phase One was carried out by a consortium of independent researchers at the National Centre for Social Research, the Centre for Analysis of Social Policy at the University of Bath and the Institute for Employment Research at the University of Warwick. The evaluation compared the experiences of lone parents in eight prototype areas with those in six areas where the programme was not operating. A range of research activities were undertaken to evaluate NDLP Phase One, including site visits to NDLP offices, labour market studies, in-depth interviews, large-scale longitudinal surveys of lone parents, analysis of administrative data and a cost-benefit assessment.

This report presents valuable contextual information analysing the labour markets in each of the prototype and comparison areas, which formed the basis of the main evaluation. DSS research reports 108, 109 and 110 report on the other components of the evaluation.
